Saints of the British Isles

For more than a millennium, the British Isles were an Orthodox land. The holy Faith having first been brought to these islands by the Apostle of the Seventy, St Aristobulus, Orthodoxy found a home in the hearts of thousands who were united to Christ and sanctified by the ascetical life. Only from AD 1066 did this situation begin to change, as foreign conquest imposed alien traditions and beliefs upon an ancient Orthodox people.

The result of this long Orthodox history is that the British Isles are replete with countless Orthodox saints. Some of these are well known (St Patrick of Ireland, St Chad of Lichfield, St Aidan of Lindisfarne, etc.), while others are much less widely known.

The veneration of our 'local saints' is essential to the flowering of our spiritual life, as so many Holy Fathers have taught. For this reason, we intend — in due course — to expand this section of our Diocesan web site with information on the Orthodox Saints of the British Isles. Please 'watch this space'.

An Initial Listing

As a first-offering of materials on our local saints, we provide here simply a listing of over 200 known Orthodox Saints who shone forth in the British Isles. Those who are most familiar and whose veneratrion is fairly widespread are indicated in boldface font. For the moment this listing merely provides the Saints' names and locations; in due course we shall add dates, lives, etc.
