Great Lent

Great Lent begins after the ceremony of Forgiveness on Sunday 18th February.

Great Lent begins after the beautiful Ceremony of Forgiveness which takes place in our churches after the Liturgy on Cheese Fare or Forgiveness Sunday. It should mark the way we should conduct ourselves during Great Lent. It is a most profound way of trying to live in a completely different way, free from resentment, jealousy and pride. Also on this day we finish up all our eggs, cheese and milk ready for 6 weeks of fasting. The Ceremony of Forgiveness teaches us to make our hearts and souls as pure as we can and truly ready to meet our Risen Saviour at Pascha, the fasting helps us to get our lives in order and our priorities right.

"O Master, Teacher of wisdom, / Bestower of virtue, / Thou didst teach the thoughtless and protecteth the poor: / Strengthen and enlighten my heart. /  O Word of the Father, / let me not restrain my mouth from crying unto Thee: / Have mercy on me, a transgressor, / O merciful Lord!"   Kontakion for Forgiveness Sunday.

Welcome the Diocese's recently revamped web site. We invite you to explore the variety of new content already in place, and ask your patience as we continue to transfer older archival items to the new system, as well as expand our materials with new information over the coming months.
